Hi Susan,

horse changes speed.  Something you can not prepare
the horse for untill you are in the saddle and
changing speeds.

This is another situation when having a person leading the horse can avoid
this problem.  We have never had this problem since using these techniques
and start lots of horses here.

Also ground riding - standing beside the horse as if you were mounting -
hold the reins and steer from the ground - it helps with turning and you can
also ask them to speed up - just asking for a few steps and then walking so
they don't get up too much speed.
