I too had the same problem,and apparently have no solution.I had a Pentium
D 512MB RAM system that had 9.10 installed and it wouldnt support any other
distro after 10.10.

After some case study i found that* It is not the RAM or number of cores
that decides the compatiability of ubuntu,*it is the clock speed.I found
that there are two series of pentium d processors,one with a clock speed of
2.xx GHz and other one,my config of 3.00GHz.*The processor with speed
2.xxghz doesnt support any distro after 9.10.*The most interesting fact is
that one of my friends had a [email protected] running ubuntu 11.04 :),which
confirmed my findings..

So a total hardware upgrade(full computer) may be the only solution.
