i tried to install firefox but it did not work. nor did opera. These
browsers got installed but somehow did not connect to internet.

I I then tried installing debian through CD(earlier i was trying through
pendrive). it worked. My PC is now working fine with debian. Thanks for all
the help.

just one more issue: i was trying to have a network between my laptop
(ubuntu 11.10) and desktop (debian 6.0) via belkin wireless router.

dhcp server and openssh are installed in both.
internet works on both through the router.
/etc/network/interfaces for both reads

auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

auto eth0
iface eth0 inet dhcp

both computers can ping the router but cannot ping each other.

The router dhcp client list shows just the laptop.

how do i proceed further?

thanks and regards
amal
