Rajarshi,

I know that Partha'da (wonder why he is so silent these days?) uses only
Linux...as a matter of fact has used it as *THE* only OS on his 486 PC
ever since he bought it sometime in pre-history :)

You have "wondered" why people still use "Win9x"...well, for some of us,
programming in DOS/Windows is what provides us with our means of
livelihood...it helps pay the bills, and puts computers on our desktops
(on which we then use Linux :).

Love it or hate it...the conditions are not yet entirely such that just
working with Linux will provide us with a decent living. Besides, take
the example of IE5..it is still ahead of Netscape in quite a few ways
(and I'm not talking of market share).

Often, as consultants we simply have our hands tied...we have to deliver
the goods as the client wants...and if we have to do that we can't let
our skill-levels drop on M$ platforms/products/environments...one more
reason why M$ resides on the HDD.

Besides, I don't see anything wrong with being cross-platform (this
doesn't mean that I'm any less pissed than some of the folks on this list
as far as the M$ products are concerned). Lets face it....we can't just
wish away M$ or its huge installed-base, not now, not in near
future....ubnless M$ embarks on a course to commit hara-kiri.

It is far easy today to convince prospective clients to try using Linux
on the server, but try putting it on the desktop....and you have a
difficult situation on hand.

If someone asks me about my OS of choice...it is Linux without a
doubt...but it is also a tool that I use....M$ products on my HDD are also
tools for me... not that I always like them, but I use them. And I don't
see this changing for me at least till such time when Linux/Open source s/w
gains further territory, and make its possible for me to do the switch-over.
