<snip>
Indra and Arup has seen some more related problems and could explain
this problem a bit better.
<snip>

What JPM refers to as "related problems" is our collective inability to use the 172226
number for dialling in into VSNL
server (particularly cal.vsnl.net.in). What would happen was we would get the login &
passwd prompts and get in, even
recieve the local & remote IP, but try accessing anything on the web or use services
like telnet etc.-- no go! Even
trying to ping the cal.vsnl.net.in server using its IP address fails gloriously with
100% packet loss.

We had been thinking that perhaps the router between VSNL and DoT have gone burst, but
Shanker and others are having
absolutely no trouble in gettng through with this number. Since a particular
experience yesterday (we both learnt a
very good lesson, one which I guess we richly deserved ;-), our opinion about the
problem has changed. What we feel as
happening in most cases is that during the recent round of upgradations at VSNL, the
guys there badly messed up sub-net
masks and haven't ensured that they are properly routable. Not all subnets have been
affected. We are in the process of
pinpointing the particular subnets that are giving trouble.
