Absolutely & I agree.... but here is a scenario where we are discussing how to
present Linux to school-goers, how we can check the obsolence of h/w (so
typical of the Wintel world) & actually bring back to use old/ancient h/w which
had been mothballed (or were in the process). Thus I fail to see where from
the question of "over-championing" arises unless you had meant it merely as
rhetorical statement & a warning to avoid falling in that trap??

Agreed... but I was rather under the impression that the 286s would be used by
the students to learn BASIC & C/C++ and assorted programming... my entire
suggestion (not referring to the professional services bit ;) was based on that
assumptiom... maybe I assumed wrongly....

Ok... so we both agree on this point.... :-)

This is a rather interesting angle to look at things... lets hear from
others... but how do you suppose that ILUG-Cal, a non-profit, volunteer-based
body bill "clients" for services rendered? Shall we not be coming under the
purview of taxation from the legal standpoint? Legal/tax experts on the
list.... any answers anyone???

Hey! thanks for the support.... we badly need more people like you on the list
who are interested in fund-raising.

Hold on a bit here! Corrections galore!! Darshan took the first step of
contacting a few ppl, me included and asking us whether we wanted to get
together & start a LUG in Calcutta (actually he spammed all of us who were the
then registered Linux Users from Calcutta at counter.li.org). I was just a
lucky guy who started up the mailing list and named it "ILUG-Cal" *grins*

And there are so many others who have extended their hand in so many ways to
help ILUG-Cal along, any highlighting of my contributions alone without
mentioning them would be doing less than justice to them.

Although it was *rather distasteful* to talk abt my contributions, I had to do
it to make sure no there be no scope of undue misunderstandings in future as I
*also* happen to make a living out of __commercially__ supporting Linux & Open
Source Software.

ILUG-Cal never been my show (I am not saying that you said so ;), nor I have
tried to run it on my own (that is something I can't & won't do). I was never
even its Co-ordinator, rather simply the listadmin (that too one who had
resigned from that responsiblity after a rather unpleasent incident).... It was
the members themselves who forced me to take up the responsibility again. As
our earliest members will remember, I never used to chair the LUG meetings (as
I do now) during the first few meetings. But over time somehow the things
changed and the members pushed me onto the centre-stage as the Co-ordinator of
the LUG.

Therefore in a manner of speaking, I just a popularly elected (albeit very
informally) office-bearer of ILUG-Cal.... While Alok is very right about my
feeling strongly about ILUG-Cal, I have only been trying to serve the best
interest of the LUG to the best of my ability... to what extent I have been
successful in carrying out my duty is for you all to judge & tell.

A fact that is perhaps little known to particularly the new members is that we
do have an informal "Core group" within the LUG... there is no elitism or
exclusionism here.... rather it is largely constituted of the members who have
taken the most active interest in the activities & propagation of our LUG...
partly the reason why the Core Group was constituted was because I was getting
too much burdened with the responsibilities

Its ok....

Its an interesting angle -- really the stuff for lively discussion on this
list.... lets hear from the rest of the members...
