Standard config for the 286s would probably be like i286, 1 MB RAM, 20 Meg HDD,
1.2 MB FDD, CGA (?) ... so base your calculations on that.... come on, even a
router these days often uses a 386 CPU *grins*

I would be surprised if those 386s have even 8 MB of RAM apiece.... My experience
of trying X on 486 DX4/100 with 8MB RAM was... well ...trying ;)
Moreover a move like that might be counter-productive. If if you want to impress a
bunch of youngsters brought up on a diet of W9x & W2K as to how a GUI should be,
you have to do better than that!

Stop crying "wolf" for god's sake!!! ;)

This is basically the same suggestion which had been placed before the LUG few
months back, only now its spread out on a monthly basis.... so how about working
out a method of collection of this amount every month from the members? Do you
mean this amount is monthly subscription or is it voluntary contribution???
Besides, although I was the original culprit behind the idea... maybe it would be
more sensible to have a flat rate of subscription for all members. If people
figure the 300/- annual is too much, then let me remind that ILUG-BLR charges
between 50 - 70 rupees per member, per meeting. So an amount of 300/- shouldn't
look like too high an amount....
