Calcutta) today....

DON'T ! JUST DON'T !! don't ask for trouble ;-) !

> till the last time I knew (couple of years
back)...
> MUC had a *HUGE* bank balance (admit its
entirely hearsay evidence ;-)...

just fyi : i am an ex-president of MUC .. so
i'll just ignore this friendly jab ;-D ...

> but it was not being able to organise any events

MUC organised the 1st 4/5 MicroFairs this city
which we are here just beginnig to try to
'participate' in

> are they didn't focus on effective second-level
leadership,

wow ! even "I" didn't KNOW THIS !

> maybe one of the reasons cud be

hmm .. 'maybe' is well worded ..

> that the time for the technical niche

goodness gracious ! all things other than
mainframes are MicroComputers (PC's, Palmtops,
PDA's, Minis, SuperMinis, PalmPilots, HpLx's,
Sinclairs, Visors, Newtons, Apples, Sparc, Sun,
Servers, MPC's, and even convergence items
like cellphones of the NokiaCommunicator
Version9000
911x, 921x, digital cameras, mp3 players, dvd
players,
etc .. its a very wide term !) ..

They have been, still are, and also will BE the
'epicenter'
SO ! may i, in all humilty, and with the deference
due
to the 'owner' and an old 'founder' member of
this
group, suggest : ask ! and know ! .. don't presume
..
and deduce .. and certainly not think that
'focus' & 'interest'
have 'stopped' .. far from it .. far from it ..
that group
uses, talks, discusses, disects, analyses,
evaluates,
criticises and comments on a range of products,
programs,
operating systems which span almost the entire
range
of computing devices .. apart from mainframes ..
which, i believe, were a very important part of
the 'wholistic'
approach of CSI .. mainframe vendors .. CSI fairs
were
BIG .. but MicroFairs were very very informative
.. all
kinds of segments were represented there .. not by
accident, but by intentional design !

> I do know that some of the MUC oldtimers and

office from time to time.

i'll leave this presumption uncommented .. dunno
what
you are trying to imply.

> I have been sitting down and analysing why some
Organisations have worked and some haven't. CSI
(Computer Society of India) has worked long, hard
and successfully as a Registered Society as it has
a wholistic focus. Organisations like MUC and LUGs
are much more narrowly focussed in their approach
and long-term appeal to the peeple....

hmm.. each to his own .. conclusion !
its best to agree to differ .. but it would
be nice to know views .. across the board
.. why some Org's didn't work .. so that
this .org can avoid THOSE mistakes.

> The mails on the list has shown an interesting
and positive trend... the group is finally
maturing in terms of

THIS does need to be understood and
analysed .. how this group sprung into
action from slumber .. so that we can
keep doing the 'right' things !

> its becoming much more than a helpline for
people in trouble... and that *IS* the way to go!

repeating request to 'delegate' .. let there be
the web site
to enable us to 'go' on "that .. way to go" ..
please !
as 'owner' only can 'allow' and 'delegate' ..
please do !

> IMHO I don't think we are ready yet to be a
Registered Society...

this is abs correct .. its too many formalities
with too
few wanting to shoulder them.

> right now when we are going all guns blazing for
COMPASS & BookFair,

my feeling .. based on the mountain of work needed
for hosting
a computer expo.. i am yet to see and 'guns
blazing' .. we're
just on the expression of intent stage .. a few
blue prints .. a
common consensus (one or both or more and/or
workshops, demos, seminars...)
.. and a few volunteers .. no 'formal'
co-ordinators .. no 'in-charges'
.. no committees yet .. no time frames .. no dates
.. no meetings
of the 'fair' committee .. we have a loooong way
to go to make
this happen yet !

> IMHO trying everything at the same time we cud
end up losing focus.

yep .. correct !

> Let us go ahead and get these events thru
successful,

and so let us all do that which needs to be done
for this success.

> then maybe we can start thinking abt being a
Registered Society.

let's just chuck this idea .. its too daunting a
task for this fledgeling
group to shoulder .. we're better with the loose
matrix format .. and
the open source setup .. no commitments .. do what
one wants ..
when one wants .. with no one to be answerable to
anyone else ..

> Let us first walk firmly before we begin to run
a marathon...

allow me to modify this a bit .. walk in step ..
in sync !

> coz a registered society is the beginning of a
marathon....

its more like a three legged walk .. quite tough
.. slows down
.. maybe comes to a standstill if not tumble the
tied up guys !
any one wanting to take up this formidable
formality ?

> Just my 2p at the moment...

this is welcome .. more 2p's are welcome also ..
keep these things coming .. so that we all feel
happy and with each other .. an in sync

..pk
