well, as far as i am aware, indranil dasgupta doesn't own ilug-cal. all
he owns is the domain name ilug-cal.org, and this mailing list of
course, since it belongs to that domain.

so what do we want to register? the domain name? nope, that's already
registered in indra's name. this mailing list? not possible, for the
same reason.

is it the organisation called ilug-cal that we want to register? well,
indra doesn't own that, he is only acting as the admin of the list used
by that society. the reason he sometimes receives more attention than
others is that he's the only founding member left in calcutta (AFAIK -
correct me if i'm wrong).

so i have some good news - we don't need another organisation after all.
we are free to register the one we have already - our very own
linux-calcutta - and solemnly present indra with a ripe fig if he tries
to object, with instructions for use. make that a lemon if it suits your
taste better.

what will he do? refuse to let us use ilug-cal.org? we'll put up
ilug-kol.org. russell will host it for free, as he has promised.

there is nothing more listadmin indradg can do to stop us.

the only thing we need, then, is majority support.

which, alas, we didn't have the last time the topic was raised at a
meet. and for very valid reasons, too, put forward by people with prior,
and bitter, experience. all i can say is that they convinced me. if you
want to hear them, let us make it an agenda at a meet where all the
concerned people will be present.

please don't bother; they will be useless if you don't have enough
people to go with you. do a survey first. if you can drum up enough
support, why, you can do whatever you want with ilug-cal itself. but if
you can't, writing memoranda will only be so much good effort poured
down the drain. and i for one will hate to see effort such as yours
wasted, because you have proven yourself to be a very fine draftsman and
formulator, with that whitepaper kind of thing you posted about COMPASS
preparation.

hey, but those are *still* the primary aims of ilug-cal! at least, they
were so the last time i checked, which was, like, five minutes ago :-)
what makes you think any of it has changed? i'm not too sure i
understand the "promote IT solutions bla bla" part, but if any of the
other points change, i will be one of the first to unsubscribe from the
list and write a "Memorandum of Association", followers or not :-)

and it's sure to be a pretty complex document, so i'll probably do it in
html :-)

yours in solidarity,
