Actually we are not part of the open source movement--that is
another
piece of widely spread misinformation. We have been working since
1984 as part of the free software movement, which has idealistic
views.
The open source movement was founded in 1998--after the GNU/Linux
system existed--specifically to reject our idealism. They never
say that software should be free. They only cite practical benefits
for being able to copy. They don't raise the deeper issues that
we raise.
The open source movement gained a lot of support by simply
describing
our work with their label. As a result, millions of users think
that
the GNU/Linux system was developed by the open source movement. One
recent article called me the founder of that movement!
This is also an area where you can help correct the misinformation.
