You want to put some definition on what your "Users Group" are users of: Is it "Linux", "Open Source", "Free Software", "Software that can be downloaded for free", "Software that can be installed on your average home computer"? > The BSD liscense is considered to be freer - it is more conducive to > being accepted by commercial ventures. That's all my ignorant self can > recall. The BSD license is considered to be more free by the BSD folks, the GPL by the FSF folks, and the Microsoft license by Microsoft. The word "free" has many meanings, as well as the concept of theft has many meanings. I consider the ability of someone else to make money off of my work without compensation to be theft. The "Software Manufacturing" people say that this means if you make a copy of their work without paying them, that is theft. Many of the "Free Software" people believe that if you take Free Software and make a proprietary derivative, that is theft. I use the GPL over the BSD/Artistic and other similar licenses specifically because it stops software theft. To me there is more of a moral problem with making proprietary derivatives of free software than copying proprietary software without paying for it. To each their own - like many things, different people see these issues differently. > raja --- Russell McOrmond, Internet Consultant: <http://www.flora.ca/> See http://weblog.flora.ca/ for announcements, activities, and opinions Submission to Innovation Strategy | No2Violence in Politics http://www.flora.ca/innovation-2002.shtml | http://www.no-dot.ca/ -- To unsubscribe, send mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the body "unsubscribe ilug-cal" and an empty subject line.
