lemm add a few lines :
i was in the parallel universe for linux purposes
..
the Compass AGM was a very very impressive affair
with IT secretary, wb.gov there and in a very
aggressive
positive mood
so was B.Hari (Ontrack) .. who turned out to be a
very
close friend of Jayant (ex-sec, compass) .. and we
hit it off very well ..
results :
1. Compass probably will not give a free stall
2. B.Hari is very enthused about open source ..
and has
committed in very clear terms that ilug-cal
will get a
part of his stall .. even if Ontrack does
nothing there ..
which is impossible .. he's very very
passionate abt
open source .. and informed me about being on
the
panel of so many bodies which influence the
open
source thing
3. Jayant was also luke warm to anything more
being able
to be done .. unless .. and here's an
opportunity .. ilug-cal
can get a direct connection to it.secy wb.gov
.. he's
very positive towards open source .. mid size
businesses ..
50% students being able to use computers ..
getting a
part of the 2010 plan .. target 14% .. etc ..
etc ..
other things : .. will inform personally as it
does not
throw any light on that which we are trying to do
a few comments below .. contraction in terms ..
we are again being trapped into that famous 'only
one' choice syndrome .. a or b or c .. instead of
all three or even four !
why not book fair too .. let the h/w provider
worry
abt dust .. and the volunteers must learn to deal
with the heat and dust .. that's the ground
reality ..
not the A/C environment of board rooms,
exhibitions,
and planning panels !
we have to bite the dust guys .. !

time, Indra-da was showing the famous Kalculate
package (for
> underinformed geeks: Kalculate is an accounting
software for GNU/Linux). We had some discussions
on the merits
> (and demerits) of Kalculate. Then there was a
round of tea - and we went on to the fireworks
show - the
> registration issue.
> The question first raised was - Why register??
> The answers are obvious - but considering the
cons, it was proposed that instead of iLUG-Cal
itself, a projection

This projection group would be subset of the LUG.
However, at this
> point the question of how to define a member of
the LUG was raised, and it was proposed that a
voting member of
> the LUG would have to
> 1. Attend a specified percentage of meetings
(assuming that there is a meeting every month)
> 2. Attend the annual AGM meeting.
> However, the question of accountabilty also came
up - money handling would be a major issue - most
of the penguins
> said that there was bound to be questions like
"Why was so much money spent on this?" and "Where
did my contribution
> go?", etc. The charter issue was also
discussed - with the senior members speaking of
the mud slinging and the flame
> war that began as a result of the earlier
attempt to form a constitution. Finally it was
proposed that we carry on as
> it is for another year - and if we progress in
the right direction in the right way, we can do
the registration after
> a year.
> The subject ofthe bookfair came up after that.
Everyone agreed that to reach out to a huge mass
of the populace, the
> bookfair would be ideal. However, the problem of
dust also remains, and one of the penguins also
suggested that the
> power supply at the book fair might not be a
very good one - the boxes running there might get
burnt up.
> COMPASS was discussed extensively, especially
the sponsorship issue. Indra-da announced that he
has some preliminary
> talks with PCQuest, IBM, and he proposed that
for sponsorship, we can also approach Samsung/LG
both of which are
> trying to project a "Linux-Friendly " image in
India. HP-Compaq was also proposed as a potential
sponsor. It was noted
> that getting sponsors would require some active
pursuing of the matters, and some intense legwork.
It was also decided
> that there should be *no* windows bashing in any
of the public events - we cannot afford to present
a fanatical image.
> It was also proposed, that as a spin-off from
the COMPASS we can hold a Install Fest - where
newbies can bring their
> boxes and we can install GNU/Linux in them
(network install??). We would be needing quite a
few NICs for that.
> Along with this, the topic of interacting with
the assemblers came up - GNU/Linux compatible
assemblers are needed
> badly :). The topic of getting school children
was also discussed - with the actual school tuxes
saying that students
> would definitely come if invited - though most
of them will simply come in order to bunk classes
;).
> Regarding sponsors, it was finally proposed that
we would proceed in a parallel fashion - all
probable sponsors should
> be approached - and finally we take the best
deal :).
> It was also decided that the drupal site would
be uploaded to ilug-cal.org asap - and some work
has already started in
> this regard.
> The meeting ended at around 2000 hrs (IST), and
all the tuxes went back home - content with the
evening's proceedings :).
