Very unlikely - all HP's CD-writers (right until the end, when they stopped manufacturing CD writers) were either normal IDE or normal SCSI. I have never come across an HP CDwriter that didnt work out of the box under Linux. My suspicion is that you probably don't have the hardware set up right. All IDE cdwriters should be connected to the seondary IDE interface of yur motherboard, and should be "Secondary Master", and your Linux setup has to be told to talk to this drive in IDE-SCSI mode. But before this gets out of hand - have you been able to get *other* CD writer drives working on this machine?
