errrr - no. I just read webpages like everyone else http://www.exocore.com/technologies/linux/rhl71dma/ This page is also referred to in the official CDROM HOWTO http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/docs/HOWTO/CDROM-HOWTO > Now I have some qus does DMA reamin dissable for hdc all the time or should I > have to give the command before each burning seassions ?? If you have a DMA issue, it is an issue - period. You turn off DMA permanently for that drive. If you use RHL, then cp /etc/sysconfig/hardisks /etc/sysconfig/harddiskhdc vi /etc/sysconfig/harddiskhdc turn off DMA support USE_DMA=0 Save. From then on, DMA will be turned off for your CD writer. If you aren't using RHL, simply edit /etc/rc.d/rc.local Tathagata - the drive remains /dev/hdc from the kernel perspective even if you are using ide-scsi emulation - the emulation only presents a scsi-command emulation to the application, and translates them to IDE/ATA commands for actual execution. In my earlier message, I wasn't quite clear what I meant by "Secondary master" - I meant that the writer should not be on the same IDE interface as the hard disks. Since all CD-devices are shipped set to "slave" mode by default, the drive should be set to "master" if it is the only device on the interface. > And to enable DMA I have to give hdparm -d1 /dev/hdc. Now should I > enable it before data transfer from the hdc to hda. nope - if your drive has a DMA issue (which is often a combination of hardware issues, BTW), then DMA is a no-no for your drive. period. BTW - for the "but it works in windows" chanters - Windows by default turns off DMA on all CD devices ;-). "Better safe than efficient/fast" is the MS motto.
