Trials are underway inside telephones exchanges in Calcutta also with similar performances. The real proving will take place once the service is launched with the copper network outside the telephone exchanges.
BSNL | has tied up with Banyan Vines to give this asynchronous DSL type (?)
ADSL2 or ADSL2+ at 8000feet. any way ADSL2+ at 5000feet would have doubled the performance.
8000 feet = 2.4 kms and 5000 feet = 1.5 kms approx. To enjoy such copper lengths in India the customer have to live very close to the telephone exchanges. The average copper loop lengths in India, i.e. between Telephone exchanges and subscribers is 3-4 kms in cities like Calcutta, Chennai, Delhi, Mumbai. In other places such lengths are in the range of 5-6 kms. In rural areas these lengths can go upto 10 kms sometime. Moreover, all these cables are very badly maintained. The numerous cuts and joints and leaky insulation etc offers a very high loop resistance. ADSL and variants of ADSL cannot tolerate such conditions. These cables are very easily damaged during rains, floods etc.
I have a feeling, that whatever be the claims and counter claims, we as users / consumers will hardly get 200 kbps to 115 kbps only.
Mbps on copper is still far away for Indian conditions. Infact, I forsee that the cable TV providers will offer better solutions very soon, as cable tv loops are smaller and better maintained, and some cable providers are already working in this direction.
