my 2 paisa: any of the modern distros will work, provided the user knows what he is trying to acheive . Some people find Slackware and Gentoo enjoyable while other claim its not user friendly - It all depends on who the user is. If it is someone who doesnt care about the operating system and just want to get stuff done, openSuSE/Mandriva/Ubuntu/Linux Mint should be ok. If the user is of curious type and want to know what the computer is doing , Slackware/Gentoo/Arch is strongly recommended.
