If you don't mind losing the other settings on the desktop, you 
could try renaming your .gnome* folders (in your home directory). 
Logout from your GUI mode and login at one of the text mode consoles.
Then rename your .gnome* directories. You can first copy (cp -r) the 
folders with another name (cp -r .gnome2 gnome2-old) and then delete
the original folder (rm -rf .gnome2). Now login into X and see whether
your Gnome is all right. You can get back your old Gnome settings by
renaming the gnome2-old as .gnome2.
