Free Software movement started when we realised we have to have freedoms to use, study, modify, and distribute software we need in every day life. During initial days, we were using Unix to develop Free Software. Once we have Free Software replacements we were able to stop depending on proprietary software - for the most part. But if we are not valuing our Freedoms, we will easily lose them. This is one such example. gmail and google groups are different in the sense we don't run the software in our computer, but we use these over internet. So does that mean, we don't care about Freedom, NO. On the contrary we realised the danger of depending on proprietary services and we have started working of fixing those. Affero GPL is one such step, Diaspora, http://autonomo.us/ etc. That is clearly the difference between Open Source and Free Software. Free Software is about Freedom, so we will respond to threats to our Freedoms even when things change and new dangers comes up like software patents and DRM. I suggest we move away from google groups. How about freelists.org ? "FreeLists is a completely Free service. We're not talking just about price here. See, there's a philosophy behind FreeLists: Knowledge and Information are free, and should stay that way. Our service is about maintaining that objective." -- പ്രവീണ് അരിമ്പ്രത്തൊടിയില് You have to keep reminding your government that you don't get your rights from them; you give them permission to rule, only so long as they follow the rules: laws and constitution. -- "Freedom is the only law".
