Isn't that too simplistic a view? Google Groups runs on proprietary software. And we don't get an easy way to move around our data if we wish to chose another provider or our own providers. So the issues are, 1. non-free software, we can't run the same service on our servers (or on some other server) if we want to. 2. Data is locked on to a single provider. Well, this concern could be mitigated to some extend by using other archiving providers. But we cannot freely move data. Initially, we were interested to Free our personal systems only, and hence GNU project and GNU/Linux. Now we realize we are ready to give up much more of our privacy and freedoms for convenience of network services. So we have started to develop Free network services. So in that context, moving to a service running on Free Software would be a step in the right direction. Like I said, we are still at the beginning of this stage and we won't be able to liberate all our services at one go. But efforts are on. See http://wiki.debian.org/FreedomBox for more on this. > points you may point out will be applicable to these ISP services or > even Hotel/restaurants or any proprietary services. > but you already to made that its just the situational choice. Now I agree there is an issue with ISPs. But that is not the same as that of google groups. Now can you explain what you think is the problem with ISPs? An ISP is like postal department - a mechanism to transfer data. -- പ്രവീണ് അരിമ്പ്രത്തൊടിയില് You have to keep reminding your government that you don't get your rights from them; you give them permission to rule, only so long as they follow the rules: laws and constitution. -- "Freedom is the only law".
