Thanks for the links, Joe.
I must say I was rather puzzled by the content of the articles, though.
Rather than food for thought, they made me hungrier for further information,
actually.
The second one, in particular, merely states two contrasting opinions that
are often aired on lists such as this one. It does not provide, however, a
decisive word from Apple (intentionally, I suppose!) as to whether one
should leave the computer on or off.
I was told by Apple Customer Support to leave my iMac on all the time. I got
hooked on the idea, and I find it the most convenient way for me as a user.
Also, I've always heard from lots of different sources that the most
stressful time for hardware is the startup process. I am not too concerned
about lightning strike (a very unusual occurrence where I live), nor about
energy consumption levels in this particular respect.
I do often leave the computer unattended for more than eight hours. In fact,
there are periods when I only wake it up once a day to check mail, and
that's all. A quite common pattern is that I only use it between 6.00pm and
midnight, which according to the second TIL would imply that shutting down
the computer is a better option.
I am now left wondering what is *really* the best option in terms of
hardware, if one's main concern is to minimise wear and tear.
A very puzzled Walter...
