Karl, thanks so much for your efforts. You are right! iMac Update 1.1 is for OS 8.5, and will not install on OS 8.1. I down loaded iMac Update 1.1 from the Apple ftp site and it would not install on OS 8.1. A good thing too as it's not made for it.
I did manage to get iMac firmware update 1.2 and it did install. See <http://www.palomar.com/go/macusb> for some very authoritative information regarding these software and firmware updates.
