I was just about to comment on this....I leave my mac on 24/7 unless I 
am going out of town or there is a significant lightening storm in the 
area.  When in sleep mode, the mac is consuming a very minimal amount of 
electricity.
I would think that it takes more electricity to start a mac (or any 
other computer for that matter) up from being powered off than to leave 
it on all night.
