There are other less expensive options, too, such as Graphic Converter (shareware, $35) Film Factory ($35) Photoshop LE (included in various scanners, graphic tablets, etc., otherwise $50-100) Many cameras also come with software of one kind or another.
One thing you could do to get a sense of what's available is go to a major shareware site and search for image processing software. Often there is a free trial period before you buy.
