This is why sleep mode was invented.......all of the computer's major 
power consumers are turned off, and in sleep mode the computer doesn't 
consume appreciably more than when turned off (you'd be surprised, all 
Macs, and indeed all computers with "soft power", still consume 
electricity when turned off). The hard drive and the display are the 
biggest consumers of electricity in the iMac, they outdraw the rest of 
the iMac by a long shot. These get turned off when the computer goes to 
sleep...
