I'm guessing that the problem you're having is that even though
you've lost your AOL connection, the modem still thinks it's
connected? If so, try one of these:
1. Unplug the phone cord from either the iMac or the phone jack for a few
seconds or so.
2. If the iMac is on the same phone line as your phone, trying picking up the
phone, when you get a dial tone the connection should be free on the iMac.

I would think that the biggest problem you'll have in accessing the
Internet will be if web developers put too much broadband type
content on their sites, making it slow and tedious for the iMac with
a dialup connection. Before we got our iMac (Rev B) in '98 I used a
Performa 600 with a 14.4 modem to access the net, on most sites like
lowendmac.com and such it was a little slow but not too bad. On sites
with lots of graphics it could be quite slow, but if you turned off
graphic loading it wasn't too bad.
However, I've had the misfortune of using it to access the net in the
last couple of months and with the exception of sites like
lowendmac.com it's become almost unbearable. This is due to sites
wide use of multiple tables, background images, javascript, etc.,
that weren't widely used 4 or more years ago. But unless, the site is
specifically locking out older browsers, it is still viewable, if you
have the patience. I would imagine that the same will be true for our
iMacs if too much of the content is created for broadband. However, I
think that there are still too many people using dialup (it's the
majority I believe) to ignore that segment of the market. And even if
that does happen sometime in the future, you can still enjoy the
Internet by getting broadband, which our iMacs are fully capable of
using.
