Since the computer is running fine from the OS X on the CD, but not running fine from the OS X on the hard drive, then the OS X on the hard drive must have a corruption or incompatability somewhere. If it were me in your position I would simply erase the hard drive and re-install everything. With a kazillion lines of code in there it can be difficult and very time consuming to try and figure out what's going on, if it's possible at all. That should do it. If not then you've got some kind of incompatability somwhere. In that case the only thing you can do is revert the computer back to where it was running fine and work from there installing bit by bit untill finally one program or extension causes the computer to hang. Since you just updated to 10.14, and if your computer was running fine before that, then your problem could very well be in that update.
