Applecare's calls are monitored so it is difficult to imagine them telling you "nope" when you ask to speak to a supervisor or somebody who might be able to help you. I also can't understand why Applecare would tell you that one of their own products was low end and that nothing much could be expected of it. In all of my experiences with Applecare, I have never been treated in the way you were and do not know of anybody else who has been.
