Paul No we shouldn't be, but something will come along and if we don't join we will be left out. Case in point
Apple's iTools. I really liked the idea of a mac.com email address. I tried to join but found out OS8.1 was no good and had to go to OS9.04. By doing this I also had access to iTunes. I found I don't really use iTools but like the cool factor of a mac.com email address. Were it not for iTunes needing OS9.x I would be back in a flash to OS8.1. At the present moment my main machine is a PB3400. Forward in time. I decide to have another look at iTools to see if there is anything I'm missing. Sorry, cannot access iTools now, because, I'm using NN4.0.8 and it is not enough. I have to move to NN4.6 or something. I decide to stay at NN4.0.8 as it is uniform across my home network - (PB3400, iMac 400, PM5500/250). I really like the .mac email address. If I want to keep it I will have to shell out almost $100 Aud (US$50) for the priviledge. To off set this I will have access to certain application(s) for free - (virus protection) but on a 56k dial up account it is way too slow. Also, I will have to update NN to a higher standard, possibly further taxing my PB3400 though I don't think the iMac will complain much if I update = non standard home network. To move to OS X I will need $199 Aud for a 512MB simm for the iMac and $129 Aud for a copy of OS X. This doesn't even take into account time online finding all the updates. Further, on another list, discussion was taking place re Apple's "switch" ads and how they were going. I decided to have a look at them. Sorry, because I'm using QT Pro 4.x not QT 6.x I am unable to view them, therefore I need to update to QT 6.x. Unfortunately in the process I will use my Pro level and need to pay another $59 Aud to the priviledge. I am a firm beliver in getting things done with the absolute basics you need. I see professionals needing the latest and greatest to get their work done quicker to stay competitive and feel no jealousy. I guess that is the difference between a Pro and a home hacker. So I guess until I find something I really need and it cannot be done on my home machines I will wait to buy that new widget. One day, I will save enough to buy a new machine with all the latest on it and then I can sit back, relax and enjoy all that others enjoyed, only later. Just thought of something else. I was recently offered ADSL here at home - $60/ month basic account. I will either have to hook it to the iMac which is away from my phone points etc or find a USB adaptor that I can connect to the PB3400. I guess I will still stay on a 56k dial up account - until I get that FP iMac or that PB G4 800. Vincenzo -- The iMac List is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
