I cannot speak to the particular unit cited in this thread, but typically what will happen is that a customer will return a machine for some reason, and the reseller has chosen to accept the return. If the original purchaser registered the machine, as one could assume would be typical since you boot right into the app that walks you through setup and registration, the clock has started ticking. And it doesn't stop ticking just because the machine is returned. The reseller will have the machine thoroughly checked out by a certified Apple Tech to insure that the machine is good as new, making any necessary repairs, and hopefully (though they don't always), restoring the software to original status. The machine can then be resold. The reseller does have to clearly note that the unit is reconditioned, and that the remaining Apple warranty is in effect, unless the reseller opts to kick in its own additional warranty. This is a particularly good time to get Applecare. Even though you know the machine has been checked out, just the fact that it's been in someone else's hands, I would have more comfort knowing I had AppleCare.

I thought that one could buy "refurbished" equipment, meaning factory-refurbished, warrantied for one year as new, and eligible for extended AppleCare protection like a new machine. Is "reconditioned" a MacConnection term? If so, is the machine actually eligible for AppleCare extended protection? >> ------------------------------ Michelle K.
