in most recent clients, reading up or down is fairly trivial. you can
just as easily scroll up or down to read whatever you need to read.

in less modern clients (which significant numbers of people still use),
it's easier to only have to scroll once and, given that many of these
clients only display about 24 lines of text, most emails will require
some scrolling, so it's easier to just scroll down and read like humans
naturally read -- from top to bottom.

it's good to keep in mind that most netiquette rules are geared towards
the convenience of those who have the most restricted or limited
choices -- netiquette is geared towards people who can't read RTF mail,
stylized text, view HTML in-line, and might be limited to around 24
lines of text per screen..... because, while you may be able to do
significantly better than that, many of them don't have a choice in the
matter. For example even today, many American universities still only
offer UNIX terminal access from off-campus -- students have to visit
campus labs sometimes to get anything better, and in that case, they
STILL don't have much if any say about the way the computers are set up
and what programs they have access to.
