More disk caching = slower performance. RAM caching is much, much quicker.
In Mac OS X, 2.5 gigs is not a lot of working room, just barely enough to operate normally IMHO. I don't recall if the OP was running X or not, but my comment was that if he has 2.5 Gigs left he is clearly outgrowing it. This comment was made based on the assumption that he has a 10GB drive or larger. Obviously if he has a 3GB drive and 2.5 of it is free, the comment is invalid. > I am running with 800 megs left on my 10 gig and my connection with > dsl fly > with the one exception being Ebay. > Anytime you are working with less than 10% of your drive remaining free, you are asking for trouble. You too are outgrowing your drive and should think about either slimming down or moving up to a larger drive. > The other browsers will help compared to Netscape and IE but the > original OP > certainly doesn't need to get a new harddrive or Mac. > It was one suggestion among many, based on his desire to achieve performance parity with a PC that is rated three times faster in clock cycles than his, the notion that he is outgrowing his hard drive, etc. A newer machine is certainly going to have better performance than an older machine. > Charles try the other including Netscape and IE with all their memory > bumped > up.
