We run 10.2.1 on a 350 Mhz now with 512 MB ram and it works fine. Theoretically the "upgrade" install should preserve all your old programs but the prudent choice is back up everything you consider important and do a clean install. Partitioning is somewhat a personal choice matter. There are advantages. Personally we use two partitions on the iMac with 9.2.1 on one and 10.2.1 on the other. Many of the Mac publications and manuals recommend partitioning, however, if you buy a brand new Mac from Apple? It will come with everything installed on just a single partition.
