I'm on a veritable plethora of these lists; among people here in my
office, we discuss things (informally or formally) verbally. however,
there's only a couple of people on-site in my same department
(essentially the IT dept). the people I really spend a lot of time
discussing things with are spread across the US in a few dozen
different locations. For discussion, we use a mailing list.

as for the "non-pros want, pros already possess" argument... I guess
one could make that argument for this list, but there are plenty of
lists out there (the Mac Managers list, for one) where it's all
Pros.... some people are just pros at one thing, and others are pros at
something else. So.... yes, mailing lists are a method for dispersing
information, experience, and knowledge... but not always Pro -> Amateur.
