Thanks (Steve and Jerry) for the responses.

The modem system preference is not set to disconnect if idle. Using 
the v.34 modem setting does not work either.

I have not yet tried to install the patch from the Apple Asia website.

p. s. Again, has anyone experienced getting disconnected while the 
status display continues to read "Connected"?
