Yes, I used them a lot a few years ago. They work, their main benefit is for getting files when your connection to the server the file is on is bad -- effectively it moves them all to your mailbox on your ISP. The assumption is that you have a more stable connection to your mail server. (So perhaps this won't help you so much.) Anyway, if you want to try it, give the URL of a file you want to get and I can tell you the message you send to fetch it. You'll need something like Aladdin's Expander to reassemble and decode it.
