Hi Macers:
Being aware of the ever expanding size of hard drives on Macs, and
all the recent talk about upgrading hard drives in older iMacs has
got me to thinking about doing backups, specifically how?
Currently with my iMac I've used about 2.1GB of my 4GB hard drive. I
do more or less weekly backups using Dantz's Retrospect Express 4.1
to CD-RW on my external USB Sony Spressa CRX100E/X drive. I initially
did a full backup, which took hours, followed by incremental backups.
This backup set occupies 3 full 650MB CDs and is working on filling a
fourth.
With Macs now having 40, 60, 80, 100, 120 GB hard drives how are they
being backed up? I realize that a user only has to back up his or her
own data files rather than everything on the drive, but even that can
be large nowadays. An example being my father-in-law who has a 60GB
hard drive with multiple GBs taken up by MP3s. So, he only backups
his non MP3 data files to Zip disks.
Dantz says Retrospect Express doesn't support my Sony CRX100E at all
under OS X. It doesn't support CD-RWs (only CD-R) on the Combo Drive
that comes in the eMac. This has become an increasingly important
topic for me as I'm considering getting an eMac which has either a
40GB or 60GB hard drive. So, what's a user with a large hard drive to
do?

Allen
