I believe I had the same problem. When you say "I have a dictionary 
and thesaurus option in its place", do you mean that you are asked to 
choose a dictionary? That was what happened to me. The AppleWorks 
dictionary was missing and so it asked me to select another 
dictionary as a database for the spell-checker.

I don't know what caused the problem, but re-installing AppleWorks 
seems to have solved it. If you do that, don't forget to save any 
AppleWorks Stationery that you have created.
