The protocols for modems are industry standards. The
drivers don't change that, unless the modem manufacturer
got it wrong to start with. If your connection is
dropping it can mean a few things: 1) your modem hung
up, 2) their modem hung up, 3) something interrupted the
connection (like one of the kids picked up the phone).
If the connection quality is just degraded, the modems
are *supposed to* renegotiate a lower speed connection.
Most of that message sounded like they were blowing pink
steam up your butt. I recommended Earthlink a year or
so ago to a Mac-using newbie and they were *massively*
unhelpful. They seem to have a much greater investment
in advertising than in tech support. Try to find a local
ISP that's willing to work a little with you. It might
be a little more money but they frequently have at least
one dedicated technical person that knows things.
