No, you don't *have* to partition the drive, but it's a good idea on the
Rev. A-D iMacs.  My 20 gig drive is not partitioned, as it came with Jaguar
already on it, so I left it alone.  The only time this became a problem was
when I did the last update to 10.2.3.  The updater deleted the current
system and put the new version outside the first 8 gig.  It wouldn't
restart.  I had to use Norton's Speed Disk to move all the files to the
beginning of the disc, and then all was fine again.  If I ever had to
re-install everything from scratch, I would definitely partition it, giving
OS X 6 Gig and OS 9 2 Gig, and leave the rest for whatever.
