A-D iMacs. My 20 gig drive is not partitioned, as it came with Jaguar already on it, so I left it alone. The only time this became a problem was when I did the last update to 10.2.3. The updater deleted the current system and put the new version outside the first 8 gig. It wouldn't restart. I had to use Norton's Speed Disk to move all the files to the beginning of the disc, and then all was fine again. If I ever had to re-install everything from scratch, I would definitely partition it, giving OS X 6 Gig and OS 9 2 Gig, and leave the rest for whatever.
