Well, in my case, the keyboard was just dirty. I hadn't spilled any liquid on it while it was in use, either. I'm guessing that something *might* have shorted out on yours if the Mac was on at the time. Mine actually worked better after it's bath, with the exception of one of the shift keys that didn't work anyway. But really, washing it didn't hurt anything. I still have it, and it's still working fine, except, of course, the key that didn't work to begin with. It's now out in the shed with a whole bunch of my old Macs. I moved most of them out there when I bought this iMac about a year ago. You're right - there's little to lose by trying it at this point.
