you have read my message correctly. i work at a fairly high-volume 
authorized repair center. on a weekly basis, I get at least a couple of 
people in the store that complain about not getting more than Apple's 
specs specify.

I'll take RAM from one of my own machines -- a 266 that recognizes 
384MB max (both installed chips are 256's) -- and put it in their 
machine. Sometimes my chips (totaling 512 physically) will be 
recognized in their machine as 256 total, or 384 total, or 512 total. 
One even recognized a 256 chip correctly, and the other 256 was 
recognized as a 32.

All of this said.... nearly every machine I see will recognize at least 
384, and some large percentage will, indeed, recognize a whole 512. But 
it's no-where near universal.
