Because fixing a mac that is that old can be cost prohibitive.  I completely
disagree with your statement that Mr. Martin's advice is "poor unfounded
advice."  It is sound and rooted in elementary school math. It's not hard to
figure out.  I recently had a client that had a G4/400 that blew the board
and front panel.  It was out of warranty.  A new board was several hundred
dollars (with my connections...more without) and the panel was expensive as
well.  He decided it would be more economical to look for a new machine.
It's simple math.  Why fix a 400MHz mac for $500 when that is half the price
of one twice as fast.
