Maybe he wants to buy a new Apple system every 4 years or so to promote the company? Maybe he didn't want to take weeks rooting around for cheap used parts and half-witted advice from people who don't know what they are talking about half the time? Maybe he realized that even if he managed to fix his machine it would still be 400MHz slower than the current lowest end New Apple Product? Maybe he realized that he would make the money back in productivity in 6 months with the speed increases? Maybe he just hated his G4 and wanted a new Tibook? I don't know... What I do know is that when Mr. Martin stated that he thought it would be a good idea to start saving for a new Mac by the time your Applecare runs out is solid advice and should be taken by all members here.
