Your question was (and I quote):

It's a very bizarre question because it implies that most people cannot 
do so. Since that machine more than meets the requirements needed to 
run OS X, of course it runs OS X.

You then went on to ADD that you happen to be running hd recording 
applications (and you weren't very specific about exactly what you want 
to run and how demanding you plan to be with it, did you?). Generally 
speaking, the speed of the HD is very important for those sorts of 
applications, the actual speed of the processor is less important. You 
would probably be best off either replacing the internal HD of the iMac 
with a faster one (the default one is 5400RPM I believe) or using an 
external FW hard drive of 7200RPM or higher for your HD recording needs.

If you'll supply the information we need to make an accurate judgment, 
I'm sure some of us here can be of help.
