Well, I thought I had the problem licked with trashing the cache,
Apple Menu Options prefs, etc. but it came back. But wait their is
more! It came back when I plugged in my USB hub. For some reason, I'd
unplugged it during the attempts to restart in just MacOS extension
sets. Anyway, I have my scanner, printer, Palm cradle, LS-240
SuperDisk drive and Zip drive connected to the hub which is a powered
hub. I disconnected all but the scanner & printer, and the iMac
shutdown w/o a problem. Same with the cradle added. Added the Zip
drive and the iMac froze on shutdown. Disconnected the Zip &
connected the LS-240, it worked ok. Reconnected the Zip and it froze
again. So it looks like I have to determine if it is a software or
hardware problem with the Zip drive.

Sincerely,
Dennis
