in versions of OS 9 prior to 9.1 (say, 9.0.4), there was a wigginess 
wherein having some USB devices (mostly disk drives) connected at boot 
time would cause the machine to freeze before the Welcome to OS 9 logo 
appeared.

I don't know if this'll help you, but thought I'd mention it.
