Dennis,

I could be wrong here, but I think that the Mac unmounts the drives at 
shutdown, or at least tries to.  Since that's when your problem occurs, 
my guess is that the system hangs because it can't unmount your Zip 
disk.  Since the problem is relatively recent, try booting while you've 
got a formatted Zip disk in the drive.  When you do that in OS-9, it 
loads the Zip drivers that are on the inserted disk instead of the Zip 
drivers from your System folder,  If you can then perform an uneventful 
shutdown, it would suggest that the Zip drivers in your System folder 
are hosed and need to be reinstalled.
