Just wanted to mention that you should give yourself an "attaboy" for 
logically and methodically troubleshooting the problem. Good job!!

Easy to determine:

1. Plug the Zip directly into one of your Mac's built-in USB ports, not 
the one on the keyboard.

2. If the problem disappears, the Zip and the hub don't like each other.

3. If the problem DOESN'T disappear (which I suspect), then you either 
have a bad Zip (quite possible) or you need to download updated drivers 
for the Zip to see if that will correct the problem.
