Steve,
I don't mean to scare you, but I had very similar symptoms on my Rev A.
Diagnosis from the Genius Bar guy at the local Apple Store after he opened
it up and did a 20 minute check on it: bad power system and bad logic board.
Repair would be $600.  Not worth it.  Hope yours is not as severely damaged.
