Hi, If you connected a functional Apple monitor to the iMac and it did not work, you will not be able to use that iMac "headless". The adapter is only to allow VGA/SVGA monitors to be connected. It appears your video board may be dead. You may want to try replacing the pram battery. I have had several Macs that lose video when the battery dies. The Macs also lose the date and time when that happens. If, before the video problem, you had to reset the date whenever the iMac was turned on, that may be your fix. The pram battery is a 1/2 AA 3.6 V lithium (usually a pink color). Available at RadioShack for about $10. Good luck, Gary Fortman
